“A Sense of Wonder”

~ Van Morrison

“The initiation to the lover’s perspective need not be a momentous affair… It may begin simply with the shock of wonder. Suddenly, the encrustation of sophistication falls away and we find ourselves standing in front of the bare fact of being… Explanations, myths, ideologies crumble like so many sand castles. When the shock recedes, we are left with a memory of having been in the presence of the holy, the awesome and fascinating mystery… The shock of wonder is necessarily rare and intermittent. In the mystic’s glimpse, as in the ecstasy of orgasm, the boundaries of individuality are melted. For a moment I see that I am a cell within the heart of Being. But like any part of an organic whole, I must rapidly fall back into my limited view and function, or else I cannot serve my purpose within the economy of the whole.”
