Nature provides us with a cycle of seasons which reflect the changing concerns of our lives. Winter is associated with depth and darkness, spring with renewal, summer with heat, and autumn with harvest. The months are associated with themes that reflect their season. In his journal from July 1836, Ralph Waldo Emerson challenged: “Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in your reading have been like the blast of triumph out of Shakespeare, Seneca, Moses, John and Paul.” So charged, in 2010, I created my first web site, Life of Significant Soil, which is an homage to natural theology and the souls who helped me on my way. Much has changed since then, still I hope you find comfort and inspiration in these pages!
Winter’s Wisdom
December:
November’s reflection over the seasons of life naturally leads us to the question of ultimate meaning and so we arrive at December’s theme, God, a concept with which I now struggle though I remain committed to my ultimate concerns of love, goodness, and fairness.
January:
In keeping with our winter seasonal theme acknowledging the gifts of depth and darkness, January recognizes the Dark Night of the Soul wherein we experience God’s abandonment and our longing.
February:
From January’s dark night of the soul, we enter February’s theme of depression where we are invited to find wisdom in the depths and bring that greater understanding back up to the light.
Spring’s Wisdom
March:
March is the month of transformation from the darkness of winter to the new life of spring. To Life!
April:
After March’s transformation from the darkness of winter to the lightness of spring, April emerges with new life and possibilities. Let’s enjoy the renewal!
May:
April’s emergence of new and rejuvenated life reaches full blossom in the creativity of May as that new life changes the world in unexpected ways.
Summer’s Wisdom
June:
May’s creativity ignites the full passion of June as spring’s renewal gives way to summer’s heat. Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on…
July:
As the summer’s heat becomes our constant companion, June’s fiery passion solidifies into July’s romantic love. Make it a Summer of Love!
August:
July’s romantic love diffuses into a harmonious love of all mankind and harmony within as we move into our final month of summer.
Autumn’s Wisdom
September:
August’s attention to personal and social harmony evolves into personal and social ethics as we enter September and the autumn season’s harvesting of rewards from the lessons of the months preceding. Do good!
October:
Our autumn harvest continues as lessons learned in previous months ripen into October’s wisdom emphasizing simplicity, authenticity, and gratitude. Thank you for your support!
November:
As we enter the final month of autumn, November, we reflect back over the previous seasons of our life of significant soil as we prepare to enter the depth and darkness of winter.
